Southend

RESOURCES

South End, made its debut in the mid1800’s with the first railroad connection between Columbia, SC and Charleston, SC to Charlotte.  As the flourishing textile industry emerged a prosperous manufacturing industry grew along the tracks. Many of the old warehouses have been transformed into high-end condominiums. South End is a neighborhood known for its eclectic galleries, shops, furniture stores, museums, breweries, eateries and music venues.  Charlotte’s light rail system has provided a spark into the area, where people live, work and play and explore nearby Center City Charlotte.

Things to Do: A trip to the SouthEnd Trolley Museum and a ride on Charlotte’s oldest surviving, fully restored streetcar, car #85.  Camden Yards features the Design Center and Pike's Old Fashioned Soda Shop.  Price's Chicken Coop has some of the best fried chicken in Charlotte with lines out the door at lunchtime.  Mac's Speedshop on South Blvd. has the best pulled pork BBQ in Charlotte, and draws a huge crowd all day long. Nikko is a hot Southend destination for Sushi, located in SouthEnd's "pink building".  Don’t forget about Nan and Byron’s for some good American cuisine with a twist.  Want to play chef for a day, visit Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen in Atherton Market.  Once the class is over stroll down to Savory Spice Shop to select some of your favorite spices or try some new ones from their 400 freshly ground herbs and spices to incorporate into your next recipe.
