Cornelius

 RESOURCES

Cornelius was originally known for their cotton mill and farm community.  The city of Cornelius was established in 1905 as “Liverpool”, but was renamed to honor J.B. Cornelius, who was the principal investor in the cotton mill in the mid 1800’s. The fading textile industry had an adverse effect on the economy, which began with the closing of the mills.  In order to give life back to the area, Duke Power dammed the Catawba River in 1963, and Lake Norman and Cornelius was born into a waterfront community.

The new development with lakefront homes, also promoted growth in the retail and dining industry, country clubs and golf courses.  Cornelius is home to Jetton Park featuring its man-made beach, and Ramsey Creek Park on the lake.  Historic Catawba Avenue in Cornelius displays brick-lined sidewalks, quaint shops and signature street lamps.  The homes in the Cornelius area range traditional subdivisions, to remarkable waterfront estates.

Major waterfront communities in Cornelius:  The Peninsula on Lake Norman, Flagship, Shearwater Point, Wrights Emerald Cove, Norman Island.
